History of Nepal

Many things can be written on the history of Nepal. Nepal is a small mountain country north of the Indian subcontinent. The country is bordered by the huge nations of India and China. Nepal is the world’s only Hindu kingdom. The country is a tourist’s delight, and a brief history of Nepal, may be of interest to many.

Archaeologists have discovered Neolithic tools in the Kathmandu Valley. This implies that the region was inhabited by human beings for at least 9000 years. The country was inhabited by races of Tibeto-Burmese origin of more than 2500 years. The country was ruled by dynasties such as the Sakya dynasty, the Licchavi dynasty, and Newars. The nation was also under the influence of the Gupta dynasty and Chalukya. Buddha was a prince of the Sakya clan.

The birth of modern Nepal was held in 1768, under the king of Gorkha, Prithvi Narayan Shah. Later in the nineteenth century, a military ruler, Jang Bahadur established the Rana dynasty.

In 1923, the United Kingdom has officially recognized Nepal as an independent country. In 1990 Nepal became a constitutional monarchy. After a troubled period of political ups and downs the first democratic elections were held in 1991. However, this small country has never been without problems, whether because of the Maoists or the Madhesis, or because of infighting within the royal family. In 2001 King Birendra’s family was massacred, and the king’s brother, Gyanendra succeeded him as king. However, unrest continued to plague this nation. At present, the country is governed by a coalition of the SPA (Seven Party Alliance) and the Maoists. The country is waiting for elections in November 2007.
